Backups are only hope. In Proxmox, disaster recovery is proving you can restore the right workload end-to-end under time pressure: the correct restore point, dependency order, storage and network path, and a working application—not just a successful restore job.
Proxmox VE is free to use, but dependable virtualisation has wider costs. Hardware, storage, backups, electricity, subscriptions and administrator time determine whether a homelab or business deployment is genuinely inexpensive.
HPE VM Essentials may merit evaluation where VMware costs, hardware plans or a need for platform choice have changed. Assess supported infrastructure, Linux operations, backup, workload fit, coexistence and migration risks before committing production services.
VM Essentials 9 extends HVM HA across a tightly connected two-site cluster, but resilience still rests on storage, quorum and network design. Organisations seeking WAN-based recovery or application failover need a separate architecture.
HPE VM Essentials combines an HPE-managed KVM virtualisation runtime with a central management plane that can integrate with VMware vCenter. For VMware teams, it is a separate platform for KVM workloads, not a way to merge ESXi and KVM into one cluster.
A three-node Proxmox cluster can be the smallest sensible HA footprint in 2026, but it isn’t a substitute for backup. Survival depends on quorum and witness design, and storage choices determine how cleanly you can recover when a node is down.
A Proxmox VE 9 upgrade is an operating-system and platform migration, not a routine package update. Check restores, boot recovery, storage, networking, repositories, guests and cluster health before approving any node for the move.
In 2026 the choice is less about which hypervisor is “best” and more about which operating model matches your licensing, management, storage and exit strategy. Hyper-V suits Microsoft-heavy estates; Proxmox fits Linux-first teams, especially with clearer subscription handling and newer distributed management.
Proxmox VE 9 is a meaningful release for enterprise virtualisation, but it is not a free lunch. Before you migrate, check storage behaviour, cluster compatibility, backup integration, firmware, and whether your operational model fits a Debian-based platform with a faster-moving release cadence.
